About Mighty B Dumpster Rental Bloomington

Ben “Mighty B” Whitmer grew up on the west side of Bloomington and spent his twenties doing what a lot of people here did — working construction, framing houses out toward Hershey Road, tearing off roofs in July and pumping out basements in February. The nickname started as a joke on a framing crew — he was the youngest man there and the only one who could carry a bundle of shingles up a ladder without complaining — and it stuck so thoroughly that most of his customers still do not know his given name.

What he kept running into was the same frustrating gap. Crews would be ready to demo on a Monday and the container would not turn up until Wednesday. Quotes came in low and invoices came in high once the weight tickets landed. Nobody answered the phone after four o'clock. On one job in 2013, a rented container sat full for eleven days on a driveway he had just helped pour, and the tracks it left were still visible a year later.

So in 2013 he bought a used roll-off truck, three containers and a phone number, and started doing it the way he thought it should be done: pick up the phone, tell the truth about the price, put boards down, and show up when you said you would.

What we look like now

The fleet has grown, but not so much that we became the thing we were trying to fix. We run a small number of trucks out of the yard on 1608 High St, keep 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 yard containers on the ground, and cover Bloomington, the rest of McLean County and the towns spilling out into Walworth, Jefferson, Dane and Green counties.

Every driver who works here has done manual trade work, which matters more than it sounds. They know why you want the door facing the garage rather than the street. They know that a container set eight inches too far forward means you cannot get the truck out of the drive. They know when the ground on a rural lane is going to hold a loaded truck in April and when it absolutely will not.

Why we care about where it ends up

Hauling waste for a living gives you a fairly direct relationship with the consequences. We live here. Our kids drink the same water and play on the same ground. So we take Illinois's landfill bans seriously rather than treating them as paperwork, we sort out clean wood, metal, cardboard and clean concrete where the volume justifies it, and we would rather spend five minutes on the phone telling you where to take an old CRT television than quietly bury it.

In the community

We put containers on the ground at no charge for a handful of local clean-up efforts each year — church and school grounds work, park and trail clean-up days, and after the kind of storms that leave half of McLean County dragging brush to the curb. It is not a marketing programme, and we do not make much noise about it. If you are organising something along those lines, call and ask.
