The 40 yard is the container people ask for by name and usually should not have. It is 22 feet long, 8 feet wide and 8 feet high — the same footprint as a 20 or a 30, with walls twice the height of a 20. Fourteen to sixteen pickup loads of volume, with 5–6 tons included.
Look at those two numbers together and the whole nature of the box becomes obvious. Forty cubic yards of capacity against about five and a half tons of allowance works out to roughly 275 pounds per cubic yard before you are over. That is fine for cardboard, ceiling tile, cubicle panels, foam packaging, insulation and office furniture. It is nowhere near enough for construction debris, which runs several hundred pounds a yard, or roofing, or masonry, which is measured in tons per yard rather than pounds.
So the honest description is this: the 40 is a bulky-light commercial container. Office and retail fit-outs, packaging and crating waste, warehouse clear-downs, institutional and school cleanouts, multi-unit furniture removal. Jobs where a crew with a dock, a pallet jack and a route to the rear doors is moving high volumes of material that weighs almost nothing.
If your job is construction, demolition, roofing or anything involving concrete, brick, plaster or dirt, a 40 is the wrong call and we will tell you so on the phone. You would cap on tonnage with the box half full and you would have paid for volume you were never legally allowed to use. The other thing to weigh up before you order one is that eight-foot walls mean nothing goes over the side. Every item walks in through the rear barn doors and gets stacked by hand. On a dock with a pallet jack that costs you nothing. On a scattered site with three people, it costs you the whole day.

The tonnage math, and why it rules out construction
Every container has a volume limit and a weight limit, and the useful skill in this trade is knowing which one you will hit. On a 40 yard the weight limit arrives shockingly early for anything that is not genuinely light.
Rough working densities, per cubic yard of loose material:
- Cardboard, foam, ceiling tile, packaging: 50–150 lb. You will fill 40 yards of it and be comfortably inside the allowance. Correct use of the box.
- Office furniture, cubicle panels, shelving: 150–250 lb. Still fine, usually right at the edge on a completely full load.
- Mixed construction debris: 350–500 lb. You are over the allowance somewhere around 20–25 yards — that is half to two-thirds of the box, and the rest is unusable.
- Roofing shingles: 400–500 lb. Over the top before the load reaches the halfway mark.
- Concrete, brick, dirt, plaster-and-lath: 1,500–2,500 lb or more. You would be over legal haul weight in the first few yards.
The consequence is not just that you overpay. A truck cannot legally leave with an overweight container, so if a 40 gets loaded with the wrong material the job stops until somebody unloads it by hand. That is a genuinely bad day on a commercial site with a schedule.
Which is why we ask what is going in before we agree a 40. Not to be awkward — because the answer determines whether the container can actually be collected. The space and access a 40 demands
An eight-foot-tall container is a different logistical proposition to a four-and-a-half-foot one, even though the ground footprint is identical.
The truck still needs roughly 60 feet of straight, level approach and around 23 feet of vertical clearance to swing the hoist. But with a 40, clearance is not a formality — the box itself is eight feet tall before the arm goes over it, and there is far less margin for a branch or a low service drop than there is with a 20. Add the working room a crew needs at the rear doors, and the space around it for a pallet jack or a forklift, and you are talking about a commercial yard, a loading dock apron, a large parking area or an open construction site.
Realistic places a 40 goes in Bloomington-Normal
- Commercial and office park lots along the main corridors, with a dedicated bay marked off.
- Retail service areas and dock aprons with a clear straight pull-in.
- Institutional and campus properties with maintenance access roads.
- Industrial and warehouse yards where a truck can line up without threading between parked vehicles.
Where a 40 does not go: residential driveways. Almost never. The height, the mass and the approach required do not belong on a house lot, and on the older streets west and south of downtown it is not a discussion — the trees and the drops rule it out before the driveway does.
Site surface matters as well. A loaded 40 concentrates real weight on the container rails. On asphalt in high summer, when the surface softens on a hot humid afternoon, that leaves marks. Morning placement is better. On soft ground after a spring thaw, a loaded truck will not get back out. Eight-foot walls: the rear-door loading penalty
Nothing goes over the side of a 40 yard. Not a bag, not a board, not a chair. Every single item enters through the rear barn doors and gets carried and stacked by hand, and that is the cost of the volume you are buying.
For the right job that cost is zero, because you were never going to throw anything anyway. A crew emptying an office floor is moving cubicle panels and desks on carts, straight through the doors, stacking them in courses. Pallets of broken-down cardboard go in the same way. The 40 is designed around exactly that workflow.
Where the penalty bites
- Scattered debris. If material is being generated across a site rather than from one point, every load walks to the doors. Two smaller containers placed near the work beat one big one every time.
- Small crews. Two or three people spend more time walking than loading.
- Awkward heavy items. Carrying something you would rather have tipped over a rail is where people get hurt.
- Stacking height. Filling the last two feet of an eight-foot box means lifting overhead inside a steel container. It is slow and it is the part crews skip, which is how a 40 goes out two-thirds full.
Practical rules if you are running one: keep the doors pointing at the work and keep the path to them clear all day. Build a flat floor of sheet material first. Break down everything that folds, nests or collapses — a stack of flattened boxes is a tenth of the volume of loose ones. Load in courses front to back rather than building a mound inside the doors, because a mound at the doorway means you cannot latch the doors and cannot use the last ten feet of the box. Two 20s versus one 40: the honest comparison
Two 20 yard containers hold the same 40 cubic yards, come with a combined 6–8 tons of allowance rather than 5–6, and have walls you can throw over. On paper that looks like it should win almost every time, and on a lot of jobs it does. Here is where each one genuinely comes out ahead.

The 40 wins when the material is uniformly light, the volume is genuinely high, there is a dock or a cart route to the doors, and site space is limited to one bay. Retail resets, office clear-downs, warehouse packaging, institutional furniture removal. In those cases one container, one placement and one collection is simply tidier.
Two 20s win when the debris has any weight to it, when work is happening in more than one place, when the crew is small, or when the schedule is spread out and you would rather swap as you go. On a mixed job the split also lets you keep heavy material in one box and light in the other, which keeps both loads legal.
One thing that applies either way: electronics cannot go in. Illinois bans televisions, monitors, computers, printers and peripherals from landfill, and an institutional or office cleanout is exactly the job that produces crates of them. Why do you steer construction jobs away from a 40 yard?
Because the weight allowance runs out long before the volume does. Mixed construction debris runs roughly 350 to 500 pounds per cubic yard, so five to six tons is used up somewhere around half the box. You would pay for forty yards of capacity and legally be allowed to fill about twenty. A 30 yard, or staged 20 yard swaps, gets the same work done without an overweight container nobody can collect.
What actually belongs in a 40 yard?
Bulky material that weighs almost nothing. Cardboard and packaging, foam and crating, ceiling tile, insulation, cubicle panels, office and institutional furniture, shelving, empty totes and pallets. Can I get a 40 yard delivered to my house?
In almost all cases we would recommend against it, and on many Bloomington streets it is not physically possible.
