Concrete & Heavy Debris in Bloomington

Concrete is the material that breaks the normal rules of dumpster rental. Every other job you size by volume — how much space will this fill. Heavy debris you size by weight, and the two answers are nowhere near each other. A driveway removal that would fit inside a 30 yard container three times over is a load no truck can legally lift, which is why clean inert material goes in a dedicated low-side box filled to a marked line and nothing else.

Run the arithmetic once and it stops being surprising. Broken slab concrete runs roughly 3,500 to 4,000 pounds per cubic yard. Household furniture and general junk runs somewhere around 150 to 250. That means a 10 yard container of broken driveway outweighs a 30 yard container of couches, mattresses and cardboard several times over. A truck has an axle rating and Illinois roads have posted limits; neither of those care how much room is left inside the box.

You are not throwing broken slab over a six-foot rail — you are walking it in, or wheelbarrowing it up a ramp, or having a mini-ex place it. The payoff for keeping it separate is real. Clean concrete, brick, block, stone and dirt are recyclable inert materials with their own processing route — crushed for aggregate, road base and fill. Contaminate that load with framing lumber, drywall, plastic sheeting or a bag of trash and it stops being clean fill and becomes mixed debris, which is priced and handled entirely differently. Why Heavy Material Needs Its Own Container

The instinct is always the same: order the biggest box available, because more room means fewer trips. On concrete that instinct is exactly backwards. A 30 or 40 yard container loaded with slab would be over legal weight long before it reached the halfway mark, and you would be paying to haul air in a box you cannot fill.

What you actually want is a low-side 10 yard, dedicated to inert material, with a fill line. Three things follow from that:

  • You can load it by hand. Low walls mean broken pieces go in at waist height instead of overhead. On a two-car driveway removal that difference is the whole weekend.
  • The load stays legal. The fill line is not a suggestion or an upsell — it is where the box hits the weight the truck can lift and the road can carry. Over that line we cannot take it, and neither can anyone else.
  • The material stays recyclable. A dedicated inert box goes to a crusher. A mixed box goes somewhere else entirely.

If the job produces both concrete and general debris — a garage teardown, for example, where the structure is mixed and the pad is inert — the answer is two containers, not one compromise. We do that pairing constantly with demolition work. The second box costs less than the overweight charge on the first one, and the job site stays organized. The Weight Arithmetic, in Plain Numbers

Work an example. A 20 by 20 foot driveway apron at four inches thick is about 400 square feet, which is roughly five cubic yards of concrete once you account for the fact that broken pieces do not stack tight. At 3,500 pounds per yard that is somewhere near nine tons of material sitting on your driveway.

Now compare that to a full 15 yard of household cleanout debris, which might weigh a ton and a half. Same truck, same road, wildly different job. This is why the concrete conversation always starts with square feet and inches of thickness rather than with a container size — measure the slab, tell us the number, and the sizing takes about thirty seconds.

What Counts as Clean — and What Ruins the Load

"Clean" has a specific meaning in the inert material world, and it is stricter than most people assume.

Clean, and welcome in the box: poured concrete, sidewalk and driveway slab, footings, concrete block, clay and concrete brick, mortar, stone, flagstone, pavers, gravel, and clean soil. Small amounts of embedded rebar in poured slab are normally workable — a crusher expects it — but tell us up front so we can flag the load.

Contaminates the load: framing lumber and form boards, plastic sheeting and vapor barrier, foam insulation, drywall, roofing, wire mesh in loose sheets, landscape fabric, tree roots, sod, garbage bags, and anything that came out of a house. One bag of household trash tossed on top of a clean concrete load is enough to reclassify the whole thing.

Rebar and mesh deserve a word of their own. Rebar cast into a slab is fine; long loose bars, rolls of remesh, and cut-off wire tangles are not, because they foul the equipment. Cut them out and stack them for scrap metal — you will usually get paid something for it, which is more than you would get putting it in the box.

Asphalt is a separate stream from concrete. Some processors take it, most want it kept apart, so if you are pulling up an old blacktop drive tell us that is what it is rather than calling it concrete.

Driveways, Patios, Sidewalks and Foundations

Most heavy debris jobs in Bloomington-Normal are one of four shapes, and each has its own quirk.

Driveways. Freeze-thaw winters are hard on Central Illinois concrete. Water gets into a hairline crack in November, freezes, expands, and by the third or fourth spring the slab is spalled and heaving. Residential drives are typically four inches thick, sometimes five or six where a truck parks. Break it into pieces you can actually lift — roughly the size of a dinner plate to a pizza box — and you will load faster and stack tighter.

Patios and sidewalks. Usually four inches, often unreinforced, and generally the easiest heavy job there is. Public sidewalk removal may involve the city right-of-way, so check before you start swinging.

Foundations and footings. Thicker, reinforced, and often deeper than expected. Old detached garage footings on the west side can go down further than the modern frost depth. This is where a machine earns its rental.

Basement and stoop work. Full basements are standard in older Bloomington housing, which means the concrete has to come up a stair. Plan the path before you plan the schedule.

Clay, Spoil and Setting a Heavy Box on Solid Ground

Central Illinois sits on heavy clay. Dig a footing, a downspout trench or a basement egress window in McLean County and what comes out is dense, sticky, and far heavier than the sandy soils people picture when they think "dirt." Wet clay from a spring dig can approach the weight of concrete per cubic yard, and unlike concrete it does not stack — it slumps to the bottom of the box and sits there.

Spoil is worth planning for rather than reacting to. If the excavation is small, a low-side box on a fill line handles it. If it is large, the honest answer is that hauling dirt off site in roll-offs is an expensive way to move soil and it is often better used as fill somewhere on the property. Placement matters more on heavy loads than on any other job we do. A loaded inert container is the heaviest thing that will ever sit on your property, so it needs solid, level ground: a concrete or well-built asphalt driveway, a compacted gravel lane, or a paved lot. Season matters too. Frozen ground in January drives beautifully. Saturated ground in a March thaw does not, and a soft lawn will not hold a concrete load under any circumstances. Why can't I just put concrete in a 30 yard dumpster?

Because weight, not space, is the limit. Broken slab runs roughly 3,500 to 4,000 pounds per cubic yard, so a 30 yard box would be over what the truck can safely lift and what the road can legally carry with two-thirds of the container still empty. You would be paying for volume you cannot use. A low-side 10 yard filled to a marked line does the same work and can actually be picked up.

Does a little rebar in the slab ruin the load?

No. Rebar cast into poured concrete is expected and crushers are built to handle it. What causes trouble is loose material: long cut bars, rolls of wire remesh, and tangles of tie wire, which foul equipment and should be pulled out and taken to a scrap metal recycler instead. Tell us up front if the slab is heavily reinforced so we can flag the load before it goes anywhere.

Can I mix dirt and concrete in the same container?

Usually yes if both are genuinely clean, but tell us first, because some processing routes want them separated. What you cannot do is mix either one with wood, plastic, drywall, sod or trash. Dirt is also heavier than people expect, especially the wet clay we have across McLean County, so a box that is half soil fills its weight allowance quickly. Give us the cubic yardage when you call.

How much driveway will one 10 yard container hold?

As a working rule, a 10 yard on a concrete fill line takes somewhere in the region of 250 to 350 square feet of four-inch slab, depending on thickness, reinforcement and how tightly the broken pieces stack. Thicker slab or heavy rebar drops that number. The right way to plan is to measure the area and the thickness and call it in — sizing a concrete job takes us about thirty seconds with those two figures.

Where should the container sit for a concrete job?

On the most solid, level ground you have — a concrete driveway, sound asphalt, a compacted gravel lane or a paved lot.
