Normal is not a suburb of Bloomington. It is the other half of the same city, and on most streets the only way to know you have crossed over is the street sign. What makes Normal its own kind of work is the university. Illinois State drops roughly twenty thousand students into rental houses and apartment blocks west and north of campus, and every August those units empty and refill inside about two weeks. Around that core sit quiet post-war streets, mid-century ranches with the finished basements everyone added in the seventies, and new subdivisions pushing east toward Towanda Barnes Road. It is the shortest run we make and the one where timing matters most.

The town started as North Bloomington and renamed itself after the state normal school that became Illinois State University, and the school still sets the calendar. Uptown was rebuilt around the traffic circle in the 2000s, which added mixed-use buildings and tenant fit-outs to the mix. The old Mitsubishi plant on the east side now builds Rivian trucks, and State Farm keeps a large workforce here, so there is money for remodeling and a steady flow of people moving in and out. Housing runs from 1920s bungalows on Fell and Broadway, chopped into student units decades ago, through 1950s and 1960s ranches on slab or shallow block basements, out to subdivisions that are barely twenty years old. Every one of those eras throws off a different pile.

On private property — a driveway, a yard, a farm lane, a job site — you will not normally need a permit anywhere in McLean County, and that covers the large majority of our Normal deliveries. What matters far more is whether the surface can take the weight and whether the truck can physically get in.

If the container has to sit on a public street, terrace, alley or right-of-way in Normal, that usually changes. Check with Town of Normal before you book, and expect requirements around reflectors, barricades or overnight lighting. McLean County handles matters outside village and city limits. Rules genuinely differ from one municipality to the next around here, so please do not rely on what a neighbour in another town was told.

A few practical things that come up repeatedly in Normal:

• Access. Our truck needs roughly 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of vertical clearance to raise the hoist. Mature trees and low service drops rule out the bigger containers on plenty of older streets.
• Spring thaw. March and April are the highest-risk window in McLean County. Saturated ground, soft lawns and posted weight limits on rural roads all bite at once. Tell us the surface and we will plan around it.
• Winter. Frozen ground actually drives beautifully; ice does not. Clear and sand the placement area before we arrive, and remember snow and rain add real weight to an open container.
• Summer heat. Asphalt softens badly on a hot July afternoon. We book morning deliveries where we can and always put boards down.
• Covenants. Newer subdivisions sometimes restrict how long a container can sit visible from the street. Worth a two-minute check.
