Gridley sits right on the McLean and Livingston county line with US-24 running along its south side, which is exactly why the town is here. It was built by the Peoria and Oquawka Railroad, later the Toledo, Peoria and Western, and lost most of its downtown to fire in 1901, so the older commercial block is early twentieth century brick rather than anything older. It is a small, deeply agricultural village, the kind of place where the elevator is the tallest thing for miles. The railroad made Gridley and the highway unmade the railroad: passenger service faded after Route 8, now US-24, was paved in 1924 and ended entirely by 1929. The village turned its old depot grounds into parks, and today it runs on grain, on the El Paso-Gridley school district and on people commuting to Bloomington-Normal or Peoria. Housing is largely pre-1950: frame two-storeys, foursquares and small bungalows with plaster interiors, wood windows and basements dug when nobody expected them to stay dry. Outside town the farms carry drying bins, machine sheds and older barns that are steadily coming down. The Gridley Telephone Museum in the village is a reminder of how much local infrastructure this place once built for itself. Nothing here is more than a couple of blocks from open field, so wind damage arrives without warning.
