Downs is close, easy and busy, which suits us. US-150 clips the northeast side, I-74 runs along the southwest with an interchange at Exit 142, and the Tri-Valley school campus sits in the middle of the village with elementary, middle and high schools shoulder to shoulder. Families move here for exactly that. The housing is a mix of older frame houses on the original grid and steady subdivision growth pushing south and east, so on any given week we might be pulling plaster out of a century-old house and shingles off a twenty-year-old two-storey a block apart.

The village started life as Delta in 1829 on ground that had been a Kickapoo trading post, became Priceville, and finally moved itself closer to the Indiana, Bloomington and Western tracks in 1869 and took the name Downs. Kickapoo Creek still runs through the northwest side, and low ground near it holds water long after a storm passes. The school district gives the village a stability a lot of small towns have lost, and the commuter appeal of a nine-mile drive to Bloomington has kept new construction coming. Older properties have plaster, lath and shallow basements; newer ones have finished lower levels that flood when a sump fails during one of our summer downpours. The village also carries a lot of decks, fences and sheds put up in the 1990s that are now reaching the end of their service life all at once.

On private property — a driveway, a yard, a farm lane, a job site — you will not normally need a permit anywhere in McLean County, and that covers the large majority of our Downs deliveries. What matters far more is whether the surface can take the weight and whether the truck can physically get in.

If the container has to sit on a public street, terrace, alley or right-of-way in Downs, that usually changes. Check with Village of Downs before you book, and expect requirements around reflectors, barricades or overnight lighting. McLean County handles matters outside village and city limits. Rules genuinely differ from one municipality to the next around here, so please do not rely on what a neighbour in another town was told.

A few practical things that come up repeatedly in Downs:

• Access. Our truck needs roughly 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of vertical clearance to raise the hoist. Mature trees and low service drops rule out the bigger containers on plenty of older streets.
• Spring thaw. March and April are the highest-risk window in McLean County. Saturated ground, soft lawns and posted weight limits on rural roads all bite at once. Tell us the surface and we will plan around it.
• Winter. Frozen ground actually drives beautifully; ice does not. Clear and sand the placement area before we arrive, and remember snow and rain add real weight to an open container.
• Summer heat. Asphalt softens badly on a hot July afternoon. We book morning deliveries where we can and always put boards down.
• Covenants. Newer subdivisions sometimes restrict how long a container can sit visible from the street. Worth a two-minute check.
