McLean is a Route 66 village that stayed useful. The Dixie has fed travellers on this spot since the 1920s and it is still a working travel plaza at Exit 145, which makes McLean one of the few small towns in the county with a genuine highway economy. Behind that frontage is a quiet grid of pre-war houses laid out in 1855, with US-136 along the south edge and open farmland in every direction. Our jobs here split neatly between old house work in the village and commercial or farm work out along the highway.

The town was founded in 1855 and inherited a church building from the failed Mt. Hope settlement of 1836, which was moved here rather than abandoned, a piece of practicality that says a lot about the place. It sits in Mount Hope Township and sends its students to the Olympia district. US-136, known locally as Dixie Road, runs east toward Heyworth and west toward San Jose, while I-55 clips the eastern edge of the village. The housing is largely frame, largely pre-1940, with plaster walls, wood windows and basements that show their age. Route 66 heritage buildings along the old alignment turn over occasionally, and when they do the interiors come out in layers. South of the village it is section-line grain farming, with older cribs and sheds coming down a few each year as steel bins replace them.

On private property — a driveway, a yard, a farm lane, a job site — you will not normally need a permit anywhere in McLean County, and that covers the large majority of our McLean deliveries. What matters far more is whether the surface can take the weight and whether the truck can physically get in.

If the container has to sit on a public street, terrace, alley or right-of-way in McLean, that usually changes. A few practical things that come up repeatedly in McLean:

• Access. Our truck needs roughly 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of vertical clearance to raise the hoist. Mature trees and low service drops rule out the bigger containers on plenty of older streets.
• Spring thaw. March and April are the highest-risk window in McLean County. Saturated ground, soft lawns and posted weight limits on rural roads all bite at once. Tell us the surface and we will plan around it.
• Winter. Frozen ground actually drives beautifully; ice does not. Clear and sand the placement area before we arrive, and remember snow and rain add real weight to an open container.
