Ellsworth is a railroad village in the purest sense: the line came first in the 1870s, and a two-hundred-foot swath of railroad ground still splits the village into two nearly equal halves. Fewer than two hundred people live here, the depot is long gone, and the elevator ground north of the tracks tells you what the town was for. It is a fifteen-minute hop off IL-9 for us. The work is almost entirely old frame houses, sheds and the farm ground around them, which means containers that sit for a while and come back heavier than they look.
