Serving Colfax
Roll-off dumpsters delivered to Colfax
Colfax is an eastern McLean County village that had a busier past than its size suggests. Coal was mined here on both sides of town before 1905, and there were tile, cigar and tin can works besides. Now it is farm country with Ridgeview High School at its centre, drawing students from Colfax, Cooksville, Anchor and Arrowsmith. Colfax Creek runs through the middle of the village and the Mackinaw clips the southwest corner, so low ground and wet basements are part of the conversation on plenty of properties. Most of our work here is old house rehab and farm outbuilding clearing.
The Clinton, Bloomington and Northwestern Railroad reached Colfax on the fourth of July, 1880, and later became part of the Illinois Central system, which is what put the town where it is. The western coal shaft worked from 1888 to 1904 and the eastern one from 1895 into the early 1900s, and old mine ground still occasionally surprises people doing excavation. IL-165 runs along the northern boundary and connects west to Bloomington and east to Sibley. The housing is mostly pre-1940 frame with plaster walls, wood windows and basements that were never poured to modern standards. Add creek-bottom ground and Central Illinois clay and you get a village where sump pumps matter more than air conditioners. Beyond the village limits it is level, tiled grain ground with older barns and cribs steadily giving way to steel bins and machine sheds.

Routes & coverage
Getting to Colfax from Bloomington
IL-9 east out of Bloomington, then northeast onto IL-165 past Merna and Cooksville, puts us in Colfax in about thirty-five minutes. It is a two-lane rural road the whole way, which is fine in normal conditions and worth respecting in fog or blowing snow. Farm addresses in Martin and Lawndale townships come off IL-165 onto county blacktops.

Local rules
Placement and permits in Colfax
On private property — a driveway, a yard, a farm lane, a job site — you will not normally need a permit anywhere in McLean County, and that covers the large majority of our Colfax deliveries. What matters far more is whether the surface can take the weight and whether the truck can physically get in.
If the container has to sit on a public street, terrace, alley or right-of-way in Colfax, that usually changes. Check with Village of Colfax before you book, and expect requirements around reflectors, barricades or overnight lighting. McLean County handles matters outside village and city limits. Rules genuinely differ from one municipality to the next around here, so please do not rely on what a neighbour in another town was told.
A few practical things that come up repeatedly in Colfax:
- Access. Our truck needs roughly 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of vertical clearance to raise the hoist. Mature trees and low service drops rule out the bigger containers on plenty of older streets.
- Spring thaw. March and April are the highest-risk window in McLean County. Saturated ground, soft lawns and posted weight limits on rural roads all bite at once. Tell us the surface and we will plan around it.
- Winter. Frozen ground actually drives beautifully; ice does not. Clear and sand the placement area before we arrive, and remember snow and rain add real weight to an open container.
- Summer heat. Asphalt softens badly on a hot July afternoon. We book morning deliveries where we can and always put boards down.
- Covenants. Newer subdivisions sometimes restrict how long a container can sit visible from the street. Worth a two-minute check.
Our permit and placement guide goes into more depth, and this article covers driveway protection properly.

Answers
Dumpster rental in Colfax — common questions
Is Colfax within your normal service area?
It is. Thirty-five minutes out IL-165 is a regular run for us, and we quote Colfax at a flat rate with the distance already accounted for rather than surprising you afterward. A day or two of notice gets you a better time slot than a same-day call, simply because we like to group deliveries out this way into a single trip.
My basement takes water every spring. What size do I need?
For a typical Colfax basement clearout, a 15 yard is usually right. Wet carpet, cardboard, pressboard shelving and ruined stored goods weigh far more than they look, and a bigger box just means an overweight load. If you are also breaking out old floor slab or block, that masonry needs its own smaller container because concrete is priced by weight.
Can I put an old television or computer in the container?
No, and this catches people out on every house cleanout. Illinois banned electronics from landfill disposal, so televisions, monitors, computers and printers must go to a collection site or a recycling event instead. Set them aside before you start filling the box. Anything with a refrigerant charge, like a fridge or window unit, also needs separate handling.
Can you deliver on a gravel drive in a wet spring?
Usually, with care. Gravel over saturated clay behaves differently from gravel over frozen ground, and around Colfax Creek the water table sits high well into May. We plank the set, keep to the firmest line and avoid turning on soft ground. Where the drive is genuinely sodden we place near the road rather than leave ruts you have to regrade.
