Farmer City sits where I-74, US-150 and IL-54 come together, which makes it a natural hub for the corner of DeWitt County it serves. It grew from a settlement at Hurley's Grove in the 1820s, and Abraham Lincoln rode through it many times on the Eighth Judicial Circuit. Locally it is known for two things: Moore Park in the middle of town, and the dirt oval at the Farmer City Raceway, which brings a crowd on summer nights. Two railroads served the town, and the Norfolk Southern and former Illinois Central routes still shape its layout. The housing core is pre-war frame and brick with plaster interiors, high ceilings and full basements, ringed by post-war ranches and a modest amount of newer construction. Downtown has the usual two-storey commercial block with flat roofs and rear service access. Out along Salt Creek the ground is lower, and properties there deal with saturated soil and wet crawl spaces every spring. Farm properties out that way still have timber-frame barns and cribs standing, and one or two come down every year.

On private property — a driveway, a yard, a farm lane, a job site — you will not normally need a permit anywhere in DeWitt County, and that covers the large majority of our Farmer City deliveries.
