Saybrook calls itself the City of Shade and Water, which tells you something about a prairie town that grew up beside timber and a river. The Sangamon starts near here, no wider than a creek where it passes the southwest side of the village, and Cheney's Grove was the woodland that pulled the first settlers off the open prairie. Once the railroad arrived in the early 1870s Saybrook became the biggest grain shipping point in eastern McLean County. It is much quieter now, and most of our work involves houses that have stood a hundred years and farm buildings that have stood longer.

The Lake Erie and Western line gave the town its purpose, and the elevator ground beside the tracks is still the visual centre of the village. Cheney's Grove Township takes its name from the timber, and the mature trees through town are part of why people stay. The housing is overwhelmingly pre-war: frame two-storeys and cottages with plaster and lath, wood lap siding, stone or early block foundations and basements that were dug for coal storage rather than living space. Outside the village it is grain farming on some of the flattest ground in the state, with older barns, cribs and machine sheds gradually giving way to steel buildings and bins. Vacant properties and estate cleanouts are a steady part of the work here.

On private property — a driveway, a yard, a farm lane, a job site — you will not normally need a permit anywhere in McLean County, and that covers the large majority of our Saybrook deliveries. What matters far more is whether the surface can take the weight and whether the truck can physically get in.

• Spring thaw. March and April are the highest-risk window in McLean County. Saturated ground, soft lawns and posted weight limits on rural roads all bite at once. Tell us the surface and we will plan around it.
